How do planes stay in the air?

Flatten your hand, angle it up a little, and very carefully hold it outside the window of a moving car, you'll feel a force pushing it upwards. The force is lift and it keeps planes in the air.

When you hold your hand out of the car window, it pushes the flowing air down. So the air pushes back up with on equal and opposite force. Your hand is also pushing forward, and that's matched by an equal and opposite force pushing it back that is drag.

The power to generate lift comes from a plane's engines. Jet engines suck in masses of air and squirt it out the back, pushing the plane forwards. The forwards motion makes air travel.

So next time you go on a plane look it the wing. You can see the wind coming up on top and you might appreciate how flight works....

Radical report writing

This term our focus for writing is reports. It needs to have a good title that tells
the reader what the topic is about.The first paragraph needs to be an introduction to the topic, and the last paragraph needs to be a conclusion to our reports.
Our reports are about things that move which is also our main focus in topic.We have to write two pages on our report,one about how it works and another page about what it is.

flying high with spinners

On wednesday room 5 made spinners out of a skewer,a piece of a cork,hot glue and a piece of plastic. First we got one third of a cork and put it near the end of the skewer,then we got the piece of plastic which we could cut any shape we liked and put it above the cork and then we hot glue gunned the piece of plastic on. Then you put the skewer in the palm of your hand and you move one hand backwards and one hand forwards and the spinner spins out of your hand up into the air.

This term we made balloon powered race cars my one was awesome because it is red. It went roughly 1 and a half meters. The hardest bit was making the weals so they don't have much friction. In our school garden we have Monarch butterfly caterpillar's there are heaps all over the place. soon some will turn into Chrysalis then butterfly's.

Kapahaka fun day:)

On Wednesday week four the Mapua schools kapahaka group went to the Memorial hall for Kapahaka fun day. When we got there Parklands school welcomed us with a powhiri. Whea Aroha and Whea Jane did a Karanga to say thank you to Parklands. All the schools were great and everyone loved the uniforms thanks to Barbra and Glenis, and a big thanks to Whea Aroha.

Report writing in room 5

Yippee!Science road show here we come! The senior syndicate were just starting their science adventure. We got to see a slide show and got talked to about science then we had a idea of how forces worked. As soon as the slide show had finished there was a mad rush to try out the science experiments. After trying as many as we could we sat back down for another slide show. At the end they exploded bubbles. Then it was time to go. Back at school we had to tell our teacher what we had learnt. The things that were mentioned were:if you have a force going one way there will always be a equal force going the other way and that how balloon powered cars work. It`s the same with a rocket.

Hip Hop Dancing

the car of 5

Last Monday we made some balloon powered race cars and the winning car was the gold car which was Dylan's and Cameron's and Alfie's. The car won the speed race and the longest distance race. Mac and Jake one the best looking car and everyone participated in the making of the car. My car didn't work because my buddy glued the wheels on the the sticks so it wouldn't move. Daniel and Peter's car won the cross country competition and their car didn't even fall oven when they went down the steps. Our room versed room 9 in a competition to see whose car was the fastest and our room won. The competition was Cameron's 's car verses Kinsey's car. Cameron's car was made out of a kebab stick some ice block sticks four milk bottle tops some sticky tape and some hot glue to keep the wheels together some card board, straws and things from a fire work paper to make it look really cool and vivid to colour it in. These are the thing you need to get to make the car of 5.

Balloon powered race cars

Last week room 5 and room 9 made balloon powered race cars.They had to move at least 5 meters and have at least 3 wheels. Me and Jayden's car was instantly disqualified because it only had two wheels. The fastest cars from room 5 and room 9 were picked and they had a race and room 5's car won.

Hiwi the Kiwi

On Thursday at 9:00am Mapua School walked down to the church for the Hiwi the Kiwi fishing presentation. It was about fish for the future and water safety. The Ministral sung songs and asked questions. Jayden got chosen to go up onto the stage and said that he wasn't wearing a life jacket so he only got a poster. Zane got a cap and a poster but I didn't get chosen to go up onto the stage.

This week, we've been learning about "similes". Similes are where you describe
something with something else like "The water was as dark as space" With Mrs Higgins, we had to write a paragraph with three similes. This is mine:
As dark as a night sky

As the water lapped the edge of the glass, th e fish swam as quick as a cheetah. The water looked freezing. It was so murky. The rock looked so sharp, if you touched it would cut you in a flash. The whole scene looked as dark as a night sky.

The day had finally come the deadly winter sports a combination of:soccer,netball,rugby and hockey(the best and the one that I was in). After about half of an hour of a bus talking non stop the hokey team was dropped off at the mot high school all of the hockey people scattered everywhere on the 850 meter filed. At the starting of our game I scored two goals and Cullen scored a few and i scored the most goals Each game was 15 minutes long. Tupperware was the hardest team and at first we Drew with them but at the end we won!!!!!And at the end we Mapua won the whole thing and then we went home.:)

Winter 7 aside tournament

On Thursday the 16th of September Mapua years 5,6,7 and 8 left for Motueka to play a variety of sports. On the bus the teams were seated and nervous while the time ticked down to the tournament. The soccer team I was in walked off the bus and got ready to play. Our team organizer was Ben Price's dad Andy. Our team got a Quick briefing from the man who ran the tournament then we went on to the field to play our first game at 10:00. Our first game we won 8 nil and rushed to tell the scorer the score. We hoped for a good challenge but were disappointed as won our second game in a row. We walked through the game scoring 65 goals with no goals scored against us, We had a lunch break and were told we made the finals. Our team were happy that we made it into the finals and were disappointed that we didn't get a very hard game. I was the captain of the team and was excited that we made it to the finals. As we walked onto the field our team was feeling nervous and we felt like it would be a hard game. Little did we know that we would win 12-0. At the end of the day we waited and waited for the bus and told other Mapua students how we went. The netball and hockey also won their tournament. The Mapua School probably won overall.

In my Class Room , Room 5 we have been doing story writing.

My story's about a girl named Coraline who really doesn't like her life she thinks it's boring and she really wants to be a pop star.

One night when she is just going to go on a boring trip with the Stevens family , she sees a shooting star she wishes to be a pop star in the morning she wakes up to a pop star life but when she realises how important her life really is to her.

Then she wishes on a wishing star and goes back to her real life and is really happy and not bored.

In room 5 we have been reading novels that are by Gary Paulson, Paul Jennings and Jack London. The novel that is by Gary Paulson is called Hatchet and it is about a boy who crashed a plane in the woods and has to survive. The novel by Paul Jennings is called The Gizmo and it is about a boy who steals a Gizmo and then tries to get rid of the Gizmo but it keeps coming back in his pocket. The novel by Jack London is called The Call of the Wild and it is about a dog called Buck who keeps on getting hurt by a dog called Spitz and one day Buck pays Spitz back and then Spitz runs away. We also have to complete activity sheets to make sure we understand what we have been reading.

gymnastics

On Friday 20th of July Molly, Eva, Maisie, Hannah and Sophie had some fun at the Tasman schools gymnastic festival. The score for each activity was 5 all of us mostly got 5/5.At the end they picked the best group floor and the best pyramid. We got picked for both. Everyone was amazed how good we performed.

Takaka soccer

At 10:30 on Thursday the 12 of August Takaka arrived at Mapua for the Takaka sports exchange. There were quite a few people arriving from Takaka. Mr Taylor called us all around for a quick brief and gave us a quick break to have something to eat. Mr Taylor called us back and loaded us into the buses that took us down to the domain. After the rugby and hockey(that we won both of them, rugby 30-25 hockey 6-0) soccer was played.

This term we are learning to write short stories. To do this we have to be able to write creatively. We are trying to show not tell. We are up to writing are novels but first we had to write about characters eg: Lydia's face was like a rain cloud with endless rain. She slowly lumbered down the street with her shadow as her only friend.Then we wrote about setting and dialogue and now we are putting together an amazing novel.

Art exhibition

This term the whole school has been doing art,I did clay making in Room 8.

In clay making we first studied about tea pots
and watched some videos on Youtube
of making a teapot with clay. Then we
made our small teapot, then we made
our big teapots. Some people made a
tea cup, but I didn't get to make one.

After that we made a plate for the teapot to stand on
with cardboard, and after that we painted the plate.
After that we got the laptops and typed what our
theme for our teapots (mine was sunflowers) and
why we choose this theme, then we typed down what
was the challenge for making teapots.

Africa Study

In the past week room 5 have been studying Africa. To start off we picked a question starting with one of the seven servants then we had to pick a way to display our work by answering the question. Some people chose slideshows and others did posters. My question was how do African people survive with very little food and water? I did a poster and finished it successfully with Astra's help. Here are some facts from our poster:

Some people of Africa have to walk 6 km to get a drink of water witch is usually dirty water.

The food there is not that nice there because they some times eat mice and monkeys.

They usually have to trade, for they have no money.

the sahara desert creatures

Today we have been doing research about the Sahara desert.
First we printed out some pictures and research and ran to get the pictures from the printer.
Then we glued the facts and pictures on to the poster that we made,then because the pictures were to big we had to cut of their poor little heads off.
So we got to play around with their bodys and switched them around.
Finally we had to pack up and get ready for maths.

Today we went to the side of the road to count cars for maths so we could graph it. We were out there for twenty minutes and lots of people beeped at as they went by. It was really fun but it was cold outside.

At 8.ooam we headed off to the lit quiz on wednesday morning at the Motueka hall. There were prizes everywhere! There were spot prizes and the trophy. We found our table with the "Mapua crocodiles" at the front of the hall. In our group there was Cameron, Jake, Jessica and lily. We sat down and had our muffin and juice from a table at the tea room. Then a woman spoke to us and introduced us to Tracy Duncan who was going to read out the questions. The Mapua lions came 10th, the Mapua Elephants came 5th, the Mapua leopards came 2nd and my team came 1st! The Mapua teams Mapua leopards got a $20 gift voucher, all thanks to Take note. Go Mapua!!!!

We both really enjoy writing our speeches, its a very good chance to be all we can
because if we do well in this we will go to a speech contest.

But first we have to read it out in front of our class and if we do well in that we will read it out in front of the school then the inter-schools if we do well. Fingers crossed!

Just a note from Mr. C saying well done to all who ran in the Motueka Cluster Cross Country, run at Rabbit Island last week. We had some great top 10 finishers, and Brooke managed to win her race by a country mile!

Beep! beep! wow that car is going fast it was going 59 km per hour. Our class was out timing how fast the cars were going towards Mapua. We had split up in to three groups and one of the groups were seeing how many cars and other transport were heeding for Nelson the other group was counting the transport heading for Motueka and my group was timing the speed of the transport. We also timed the speed of some bikers and walkers too. Then it was time to swap over. After three times swapping we went back to class with our data. Then we recorded it down here are our recordings:

At school in room 5 we've been learning about parachutes and which one falls the slowest and the fastest and we found out that a twisted piece of paper with a pointed head works the best for the fasted. For the slowest falling, a piece of lunch paper which got the time of 3.15 seconds.

At school we have been learning about Africa for the World Cup 2010. We found out that they don't have many schools, have a Nile river that feeds their crop, they don't have much water or power. At Africa they have lovely flowers that bloom at certain times of the year.

Cross country in Mapua

Splash splosh puff huff, this is the wettest cross country ever. We all went hard out running this year's cross country.
We were slipping and sliding, it was almost impossible to run. In everyones mind it was win win win, don't come last.
The school went wild when our group set off for the finish line. We ended with a cheer from the teachers.

The day was very wet underfoot and all the runners got dirty and mud-splashed. But we thought it was so much fun. At the end, all I wanted to do when I had finished the race was to flop down on a bed and go to sleep.

A Rugby star visit

Wow! I never knew so many people were Rugby league fans. Mapua School was going crazy over Rubin Wiki the rugby star. His autographs were completely everywhere on tee shirts on his photo in books even on diary's. Over all this came the smell and sound of a sausage sizzle even the sausages were going wild over Rubin Wiki's arrival. Then came the great moment to see how high he could kick the rugby ball. Woosh it soared almost to the clouds.

Then came the tragic moment for some "GOOD BYE!" yelled Mapua school.

How to work a boat rod

HOW TO WORK A BOAT ROD:
1: take out your boat rod 2:get bait from the fridge(skin side first) 3:flick the rod arm down 4:put thumb on the fishing line 5:then you should feel a slight thud 6:flick the arm up reel in a bit (so there's no slake) 7:when you feel a little tug "strike"(lift the rod up as fast as you can 8:when you feel the line going psycho keep the rod up(so there's no slake)it will give the fish a chance to get away 9.get a damp cloth and hold the fish up- side-down, 10.slowly pull the hook out. 11. get a dongger and bash the fish on the head and put it in a bucket of water.

Ripper rugby

Room 9 Maths

For Maths this year Me,Mac, Peter and Seth from room 5 a year 5-6 class go to room 9 a year 6 class for maths. 4 people is to small for a group so we are in the middle maths group called the caterpillers. Lately we have been working on decimals. Decimals are little dots that separate whole numbers by 1/2 numbers and 1/4 no eg. 42310.987 the 8 is in the hundreths collom and the 4 is in the thousands collom.

Room 5 has been studying Art with Colin McCahon as our base Artist.He was a famous landscape artist and we are trying to copy his ideas. We also went on an art walk to look at some art galleries to see paintings and sculptures and lots more art. We are also doing our own Colin McCahon pictures.
Here are some facts about Colin McCahon.

He was born on the first of August 1919 in Timaru.

Took art classes with Russel Clark in Dunedin and loved art from early age.

Died 27 May 1987 in Auckland.

In Room 5 we have been learning about an artist Colin McCahon.He draws and paints
the country side,mostly hills and mountains and sometimes beaches.We have been drawing
some pictures of places around Mapua and we are going to pick one to paint as our final one to go on the classroom wall!

This term Room 5 is emulating Colin McCahon . We are drawing his paintings . MrC took some photos of Mapua and we drew them like Colin McCahon would and we will paint these photos soon like Colin McCahon Would .

We've also been doing apostrophes like tests to see if you can place the apostraphys in the right places .

LOOPY! is a maths game that is awesome! everybody gets a card with a maths question on it and another number on it like 22 for an eg. and someone might have 11 times 2 so they would say "I have 11 times 2 but who has 10" and somebody will say "I have 2 times 5 but who has 15" and that would carry on in a big loop until it got to Mr T again.

This term room 5 have been learning about Colin McCahon and his art work. He is a great landscape artist and his art is often dark and gloomy. Mr C took photos of Mapua for us to draw in Colin McCahon's style, but first we drew one of his pantings -Six days in Nelson and Canterbury, then we moved on to our own panting. First we did drafts in our art books, then we will paint on big shets of paper and they will look great.

Yesterday it was the senior sports and room 5 were doing rugby with Mr C. First we practised our passing then we practised our spins. Finally we had a game of rippa rugby and we won!!!

In room 5 this week we have been trying to draw Colin McCahon paintings. Mr.C took some photos of Mapua and we had to try draw them how Colin McCahon would paint them. We have also been learning about apostrophes and where to put them.

Room 5 are learning about a famous man Colin mc cahon. we are drawing simple pictures of landscapes and hills. Colin McCahon was born in August the 1st 1919 in Timaru although his family lived in Dunedin. He was interested in art from early age. One of his paintings was called SIX DAYS IN NELSON CANTERBRY.

As the woman pointed the gun into the air we took our positions. My legs were shaking like a loose lamp post as the woman steadily pulled the trigger "BANG BANG" what the... SPLASH! My heart was beating like drums. Up I come up up up pant pant pant "got to win, got to win" I thought to my self. As my hands slammed on the wall the man hands me a number one yessss. As I walked back to my spot I was panting like a race horse I can't believe it, I came first.

As the gun fired, we charged in the water. We shot through the water like torpedoes. Once we came out of the water we took a deep breath and we started doing breast stroke. We were having a great amount of fun until it ended. When we were allowed, we dived in the pool as fast as you could say awesome!

When I came back to school from the holidays my new class was Room 5. We all put all our stuff in our desk trays. We met our teacher Mr Clearwater then in the next 3 days George came to Room 5 and we went swimming.

Kruz took photos of us, and we used pastels to colour and added shading and detail. The class made rules for the class treaty to make it a better place. We all signed the treaty so we keep to the rules. If we break them there are consequences.

WEEK 3- Home learning starts

Just a gentle reminder to all children that the word of the week is DEFIANT (which hopefully none of you are...). The word of the week is going to make a huge word tree in our classroom, which will add to the your vocabulary and writing skills. Last week's word was ECSTATIC- see if you can remember on the blog poll at the top right of the Room 5 blog.

Remember also: Reading for at least 15 minutes every night, Spelling words, Maths 'Heads Up' or 'Maths Mates'.

Congratulations to all who gave it their all in the tryathalon last Friday. An awesome effort which made me proud of all the fantastic kids in Room 5. Since I was on pool duty I could only take pool photos while trying not to get splashed! Here are a few photos of Room 5 kids.

I am excited about the Tryathalon today! I just love the tryathalon because you get to swim
but the pool is mostly cold. The running is probably the hardest. Biking is the easiest.

Class Treaty

Our class has been deciding on a class treaty some rules we decided on are,be kind and friendly, treat others the way you want to be treated, listen to others and lots more. We will sign the treaty and if we do not go by it there will be consequences say if we talk when the teachers talking we will get a yellow card.

12/2/10 week 2

Mr. Clearwater is a really cool teacher because we get to do lots of basic fact tests. Last week we played soccer on the field at lunch time. It was Room11 vs Mr. Mac and the rest of the school room 11 lost. Mr. Clearwater plays a game with us (if he is in a good mood).

WELCOME TO ROOM 5!

Room five consists of 24 awesome kids at the Year 5/6 level. Their teacher, Mr Clearwater, has moved to sunny Mapua in 2008 from Dunedin with his family for a taste of the good life that the Top-of-the-South offers.
